Susunia Hill is about 20-25 km from Bankura town, one of the closer day-trip destinations, reachable in under an hour by road. It's a laterite hill on the edge of the Chota Nagpur plateau, known for ancient rock inscriptions — including one attributed to the 4th-century king Chandravarman — caves, and a manageable trek best done early in the morning.
Why Susunia Hill Is Different From Bishnupur and Mukutmanipur
Susunia sits at the point where Bankura's flat, red-soil agricultural land starts giving way to the rockier terrain of the Chota Nagpur plateau. That geological shift is what makes the hill interesting — it's built of laterite rock rather than the alluvial soil common closer to Bankura town, and the trail up passes old caves and inscribed rock faces rather than temples or water bodies.
The most notable of these is a rock inscription associated with Chandravarman, a 4th-century regional ruler, which historians treat as one of the older epigraphic records in this part of Bengal. Beyond the historical interest, the hill is popular simply as a short, satisfying trek with a view over the surrounding plain from the top.
