Bishnupur is about 34 km from Bankura town, roughly an hour's drive along the state highway. It was the capital of the Malla dynasty and is known today for its terracotta temples — including the Rasmancha and Jor Bangla — along with Baluchari silk sarees and the Bishnupur gharana of Hindustani classical music. Most visitors do it as a half-day or full-day trip from Bankura.
Why Bishnupur Is Worth the Trip
Bishnupur was the seat of the Malla kings, who ruled this part of Rarh Bengal for several centuries. What they left behind is unusual for the region: dozens of brick-and-terracotta temples, carved with scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Krishna legends, built in a distinctive local architectural style rarely seen outside this pocket of West Bengal.
The town is compact enough to cover on foot or by cycle-rickshaw once you arrive. Beyond the temples, Bishnupur is also known for Baluchari sarees — silk weaves with mythological figures woven into the pallu — and for the Bishnupur gharana, one of the older schools of Hindustani classical vocal music, which still has practising exponents in the town.
